The UK Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, met with the leader of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, in Garowe this week to discuss key issues, including the reform of the country’s constitution.

During the meeting, the Ambassador and regional authorities discussed the UK’s partnership with Puntland, emphasizing the importance of dialogue on critical issues such as constitutional reform and exploring ways in which the UK can support economic growth in the region.

As part of Somalia’s international partners, the UK government seeks a resolution to the political conflict between Puntland and the federal government leaders to restore cooperation between the two entities.

The federal government recently stated that it has invested considerable effort in improving its relationship with Puntland.

Last month, the semi-autonomous state of Puntland announced its withdrawal from the country’s federal system, opting to govern itself independently until constitutional amendments proposed by the central government are approved through a nationwide referendum.

The federal parliament approved several constitutional changes that the government says are necessary to establish a stable political system.
