Somalia’s bicameral legislature session descended into chaos yesterday as several lawmakers reportedly obstructed the opening, which was expected to be chaired by Speaker of the Upper House, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi.
The agenda for both Upper and Lower House lawmakers was to discuss the first reading of the government budget for 2024 and the budget audit for 2022 and 2023. However, lawmakers were reluctant to address both agendas simultaneously.
Several other lawmakers opposed having Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, the Speaker of the Upper House, chair the session.
A press statement from the Upper House indicated that the People’s Assembly members disrupted Saturday’s session, clearly refusing to have the meeting chaired by Abdi Hashi. The statement emphasized that the disruption did not involve senators.
