Somalia Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama commended Somali women’s crucial role in supporting anti-al Shabab operations and ensuring security during the Women’s Day for Peace and Security meeting in Mogadishu on Tuesday.
Mr. Jama emphasized that women also play an essential role in economic development, business, and production. He added that the government is committed to enhancing the representation of women in politics and leadership positions in the country.
Over the last few months, the Somali government-led military operations have made significant progress against the Islamist insurgency group Al-Shabab. Just last month, the Somali government released a report stating that it had killed 1,650 al-Shabab terrorists and injured over 550 others in the past two months during a series of military operations in Galmudug and Hirshabelle States.
During these operations, women’s groups have been actively involved in involved in preparing and providing food for the government’s army to show solidarity and boost morale during these critical operations.
