  1. At least 12 people have been killed and 13 others injured in a burial stampede at a shrine in Indian-administered Kashmir in the early hours of today morning, officials say.

“At least 12 people were killed and 13 others were injured,” A senior government official told AFP.

“The damage could be huge as the road to the mountain temple is full of people trying to make New Year’s visits,” Said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The burial took place at Mata Vaishno Devi Temple, one of the most revered Hindu temples in northern India.

Another official from the Disaster Management Agency confirmed that a number of people at the temple had died, saying that a landslide had taken place in the early hours of the morning leading to the stampede.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to say, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of life in one of our places of worship,”

He said that he had contacted local and emergency authorities to help those affected in the incident.
