Kismayo Journalist trained on human rights by UNSOM ahead of Somali poll

UNSOM in collaboration with the Ministry of Information of the Jubbaland State of Somalia is conducting a two-day training workshop for journalists based in Kismayo, Jubbaland state.

The Training course on human rights was provided in accordance with the electoral system and is intended to strengthen the ability of journalists to monitor, investigate, report on and discuss violations of human rights, including the right to freedom of expression.

The training was jointly conducted for journalists working for the Jubbaland state media and independent journalists in Kismayo.

The Deputy Minister for Information of the Jubbaland state and the Director of the Ministry were present at the training event at a local hotel in Kismayo town.

The two jointly inaugurated the training event and advised the journalists to closely monitor and report the poll matters in an independent,unbiased and professional manner in line with the Journalism code of ethics and standards.

The Ministry officials also thanked UNSOM for the training event adding that it will go along way in helping shaping the poll atmosphere and the dessimination of concrete information and news based on facts.
Today’s training for Jubbaland state and independent journalists in Kismayo comes as the media prepares to cover the country’s upcoming elections under the auspices of UNSOM.

The UNSOM is aiding in the provision of human rights based trainings to journalists ahead of the much awaited Somali elections.
