Israeli opposition parties have reached an agreement to form a new government to end Benjamin Netanyahu’s 12-year rule as Israel prime minister.
Yair Lapid, leader of the Yesh Atid center party, announced the formation of an eight-party coalition.
In the transfer process, the leader of Yemen’s right-wing party, Naftali Bennett, will first be prime minister before handing over to Mr Lapid. Parliamentary vote is still needed before the government can be sworn in.
In a statement, Mr Lapid said he had informed President Reuven Rivlin of the deal, adding: “I promise this government will work to serve all Israeli citizens, both those who voted and those who did not.
In a letter to the president, Mr Lapid said he and Bennett would lead the government, replacing the prime minister on August 27, 2023. Mr Rivlin called on parliament to convene as soon as possible for a vote of confidence.
