The Union of Somali Candidates, including former presidents, prime ministers and former ministers, has issued a statement informing some of the leaders of international organizations and ministers of the seriousness of the political crisis that threatens Somalia’s sovereignty and foreign affairs of several countries.
The statement was signed by the 15 candidates. The letter was sent to US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and African Union Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Dr. Yousef Bin Ahmad Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Othaimeen and the Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit.
They said the members they sent are expected to help speed up the implementation of the electoral process which will ensure parliamentary and presidential elections happen in a smooth manner.
“Since the end of former President Farmajo’s term of office on February 8th, Somalia has not had a legitimate and constitutional government,” The statement said.
It further added that “The debate on the personal interests of the former president to stay in office until a replacement is elected is not correct, He’s the main reason for postponing the election process”.
