Bombings, looting and fighting continue in parts of Tigray region, according to the TPLF after Ethiopian government forces said they would arrest the group’s leaders within days.
Abiy’s government says fighting has calmed down a week after it seized the regional capital, Mekelle.
But TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael told Reuters in a text message that they were still fighting outside the city.
He said government forces bombed Abbi Adi on Friday, without giving details, while TPLF spokesman Getachew Reda accused government forces of looting Mekelle.
Government forces did not respond to allegations from the TPLF.
Colonel Shambel Beyene of the government forces said on Friday that they were 10 km from the Gore forest where Debretsion, Getachew and other TPLF leaders are believed to be hiding.
“We only need a few days to go,” he told state television.
On the other hand, some residents of the region are worried that there will be a shortage of food, fuel and medicine in the region. Some also say that looting took place in some areas.
The Abiy government is committed to protecting the people of the region and ensuring that their needs are addressed.
“Reconstruction work in Tigray has begun with teams working to rehabilitate and restore services,” Abiy said in a tweet.
