Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni announced his administration’s support for Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe to conduct an independent election next months, emphasizing the importance of respecting local governance autonomy.

“We are committed to supporting Jubbaland in holding elections according to law and order,” Deni stated. He urged the Jubbaland election committee to proceed with the process with the elections.

“The federal government lacks the constitutional authority to interfere in member state elections,” he asserted, accusing federal leaders of attempting to suspend regional constitutions to maintain control.

He further alleged that the federal administration opposes “one person, one vote” elections in favor of a plan to extend regional state terms by one year to secure its own extension. Deni warned that Somalia’s stability could be jeopardized if the federal government does not adhere to legal frameworks.

Puntland declared semi-independence in April 2024, citing dissatisfaction with the current federal constitution. The oil-rich state stated it would operate independently until constitutional revisions are approved via a national referendum.
