Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday sent a message of condolence to Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber following the unfortunate death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter accident.

President Mohamud expressed deep condolences and extended sincere sympathies to Mokhber, the family of President Raisi, and the Iranian government and people.

“The Somali Government expresses its profound sympathy and condolences to the Government and the people of the Republic of Iran on the sad passing of President Ibrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials accompanying them following the tragic helicopter crash”, President Mohamud said.

President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and several others were killed in Sunday’s helicopter crash in north-western Iran.

In 2016, the Somali government cut diplomatic ties with Iran and ordered all Iranian diplomats and embassy staff out of the country in response to what the government described as Iran’s continuous interference in Somalia’s internal affairs. Since then, the government has not officially announced the restoration of its diplomatic relationship with Iran.
