Al-Shabaab militants reportedly demolished the largest water well in El-Garas, a recently liberated district in the Galgadud region, yesterday.

According to Galmudug State authorities, the militants planted mines throughout the district, including the water well. Additionally, they attacked a water tanker heading to the local civilian population.

On Monday, two prominent figures, Mohamed Mohamud Ahmed (known as Mohamed Yare), a member of the Galmudug Parliament, and Abdullahi Ibrahim Shaaciye, a member of the Dhusamareb Local Council, were killed in a landmine explosion in El-Garas district. These lawmakers and other politicians had arrived in the district to assess the area liberated from al-Shabaab militants.

The Somali Defense Ministry issued a short statement on the liberation of El-Garas from the militants by the army, but it did not mention any casualties or the bomb attack.
