Somaliland’s military court handed down a nine-year prison sentence on Sunday to Faisal Ali Ibrahim, 42, for his membership with al Shabab.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Defense of Somaliland, it was explained that the 1st-degree military court in the western region found Faisal guilty of recruiting fighters for the group within Somaliland.

Though the Somaliland Police have recently reported the arrest of suspected al-Shabab members, Sunday’s statement from the Ministry of Defense did not specify if the convicted individual was among those detained by the police.

In January 2022, Somaliland executed six men convicted of murder. These men were found guilty of killing soldiers and were executed by a firing squad at Mandera prison.
