Puntland regional state president Saed Abdullahi Deni announced last night that he will run for the presidency of Somalia.

“Tonight, I want to inform the people of Puntland and Somali people that I am running for President of Somalia. I urge all Somali presidential contenders to unite in order to replace the current administration” he said during his announcement remarks in Garowe.

Deni, one of the most vocal critics of President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo, has now joined the list of dozens of candidates vying for Villa Somalia.

He has promised to collaborate with anyone who wants to depose President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.

International partners strongly urge all Somali stakeholders to resolve any obstacles to completion of the process in the remaining voting sites through dialogue and on a consensus basis, so as to rapidly and credibly conclude the elections.

The Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT) certifies that the swearing-in ceremony for members of both Houses of Parliament will be held on April 14, 2022, in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office.

Saed Abdullahi Deni, a former Somalia planning minister, was elected president of Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region in 2019 after receiving 35 out of 66 votes casted by regional parliamentarians in the final round.
