The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says for the first time in five months medical aid has been delivered to the war-torn Tigray region.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said more flights were coming in the coming days and that supplies would be flown by land.

The move follows a request from the Ethiopian government to facilitate the delivery of food and medical supplies by air to rebel-held areas. Health officials have warned that patients are dying due to lack of medication.

Fighting has resumed in the area along the border between Tigray and Afar regions which may further complicate land access to aid.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said no medicine has been allowed in the Tigray region since May last year.
