Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that he will support mediation efforts to end the conflict in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia.
Erdogan made the remarks at a joint news conference with the Ethiopian prime minister in Ankara, Turkey.
President Erdogan stressed the importance of peace and integration, while warning that if the situation in Tigray worsens, it will affect all neighboring countries.
“As Turks, we are ready to make any contribution to the resolution of the Tigray crisis, including mediation,” said President Erdogan.
Abiy Ahmed said relations between the two countries were based on respect and desire, but the two leaders did not disclose anything about the agreement.
Northern Ethiopia has been weakened by conflict since November 2020, when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent troops to the Tigray region under the TPLF.
Tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the fighting while dozens others have taken refuge in refugee camps inside Sudan while another 400,000 are starving in Tigray Region.
