Passports for some people around the world are an important item that should always be available to you while others see it as a barrier to travel.
The Henley Passport Index, recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (IATA), annually publishes a list of world passports and the order of ease of travel.
Japan’s passport is once again the most powerful passport in the world in 2021, according to the number of countries that can be used without a visa or at an airport.
The top three world passports are:
- Japan
- Singapore
- South Korea
German passports are also tied for third place with South Korea.
This year’s list is similar to last year’s 2020 by Helney’s website, especially in terms of the top and bottom rankings.
Holders of Japanese passports can travel to 191 countries without a visa and get their first visa.
Citizens of the small country of Singapore, also located in Asia, can also travel to 190 countries around the world without a visa.

At the bottom is the Afghan passport, which for many years has been the worst in the world.
Somali passports are the fifth worst in the world in 2020, with four on the list: Pakistan, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Somali passport ranks 10th and can be traveled to 33 countries around the world without a visa.
Pakistan has easy access to passports from 32 countries, and Somalia has overtaken Pakistan in the past few years.
Syrian passports can be used to travel to 29 countries without a visa, 28 to Iraq, and only 26 to Afghanistan.
