The Somali government announced on Saturday that its soldiers, backed by local clan militias, killed about 47 al-Shabab militants and wounded dozens more in a foiled terror attack on a military base in central Somalia.

The attack, which began with explosions followed by gunfire, occurred in the El-dher district of the Galgadud region on Saturday morning.

The Somali Ministry of Information stated that the militants suffered heavy casualties during the attack but did not comment on reports about a US drone strike in the Ali Yaba area in response to the incident.

The Ministry added that five government soldiers were also killed in the attack, although local media reported that senior military officers were among those killed.

Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack on El-dher. The militant group has been waging a deadly insurgency against the fragile central government in Mogadishu for more than 16 years
