Somalia armed forces court sentences terrorism group; RPGs, AK-47s seized

The Somali Armed Forces High Court has once more issued varying sentences to a group convicted of terrorism. The group was involved in planned assassinations and other violent acts.

The group’s failed attack attempt on September 17, 2022, in Howlwadaag district led to their swift capture by undercover security forces.

The group, comprising eight members, was armed with RPGs, F1 grenades, AK-47s, and had financial records, medical equipment, badges, and luxury cars.”

Some members were apprehended for harassing civilians, while others were caught in secret locations in Mogadishu neighbourhoods such as Gubta, Hawa Abdi, Oodweyne, Alhayat Ceelasha, Isse Abdi, and Ali Turcaye.

After several trials, the Military Court of First Instance handed down various sentences on these cases on December 17, 2022, and July 1, 2023.

The Supreme Court, providing ample time for the case, announced its final verdict today on the group known as Jugta Heavy.

Abdi Nasir Osman Nunow Mama and Mohamed Dahir Abukar (Ismail), the group’s ringleader, surrendered on February 8, 2023. Abukar was involved in a violent clash on September 7, 2022, resulting in injuries leading to his death on October 20, 2023.

Hassan Ali Hussein Ibrahim was sentenced to death for the murder of military member Abdirahman Abduqadir Abdi Ahmed on June 18, 2023. Ibrahim was injured by return fire from Ahmed before his death.

Addow Ahmed Alasow received a four-year military prison sentence.

Abdiweli Sheikh Mukhtar Mohamud, in charge of transportation and medical logistics for the group, was sentenced to eight years in military prison.

Ibrahim Abdullahi Mohamed Hussein, who spent over three thousand dollars and was notably mentioned by the second judge, was sentenced to five years.

Abdullahi Sheikh Mohamed Hilowle, who managed the group’s secret safehouses and cared for wounded militants, received a three-year military prison sentence.

Zainab Ibrahim Adan Hussein, who surrendered on January 13, 2023, at the Aniga branch and was responsible for the group’s arsenal, was sentenced by the Supreme Court to eight years in military prison.
