A senior al-Shabab militant leader, Abdirahman Hiiti Ibrahim, known as Abu Abdirahman, surrendered to Somalia’s Gorgor (Eagle) commandos based in the Harardhere district of the Mudug region.
Government officials revealed that the defector held a leadership role within the group, overseeing Nurdugle and Gulane areas in the Middle Shabelle region for the past seven years.
“Abdirahman, who has been a member of the group for seven years, reported a difficult situation within the enemy, particularly in Gumad and Gumaysi areas, where militants have started fighting each other,” stated the country’s military command.
The surrender of the senior al-Shabab leader coincides with a recent increase in the number of al-Shabab members surrendering to Somali government forces.
