The Puntland Regional State President has opposed yesterday’s political decisions made by the traditional elders following days of meetings in Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland State.
The 28 traditional leaders have called on the regional leaders to prepare for the indirect election, in which clan leaders will select lawmakers, who will then elect the Parliament leadership, President, and Vice President.
The regional state presidency said in a press statement on Wednesday night that the political leaders will listen to the recommendations that support the fruition of the democratic and the one-person, one-vote election process.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved amendments to the election rules last night, which it said will soon be submitted to the House of Representatives.
President Said Deni emphasized his commitment that the people will have the power to vote for their leaders based on the election timeline. The elders stressed that the election must be on January 8, 2024.
However, the opposition welcomed the statement from the elders, saying that their advice would be the only way Puntland could overcome the election dispute.
