Somali President meets with Sudan’s Supreme Council envoy

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Ambassador Dafallah Al-Haji Ali, the envoy of Sudan’s Supreme Council, in Mogadishu on Saturday. The president expressed concerns over the ongoing armed conflict in Somalia and emphasized the historical ties between the two nations. Mohamud reiterated the Somali Federal Government’s plea for Sudanese citizens to halt the war and engage in peaceful negotiations.

Mohamud underscored the Somali government and people’s support for Sudan’s peace, unity, and constitutional institutions. He confirmed that Somalia’s vote in IGAD, the African Union, and United Nations Organizations are in favour of Sudan’s governance and stability.

Last Wednesday, Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abshir Omar Jama, led a meeting in Mogadishu to expedite evacuation efforts for Somali citizens trapped in Sudan. The Somali government has evacuated four groups totalling 242 Somalis from Sudan.

Saudi Arabia and the United States applauded the commencement of “pre-negotiation talks” in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). A joint statement urged the parties to actively participate and reach a lasting ceasefire.

According to the Sudanese Doctors’ Union, 479 of the deceased were civilians, with another 2,518 injured.
