Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud holds fruitful meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres who made historic visit to Somalia

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has today held a fruitful meeting at the Presidential Palace with the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who made a historic visit to Somalia.

President Hassan Sheikh and Secretary António Guterres discussed the future of bilateral cooperation, priority plans for the government of Somalia, existing challenges and areas that aid and activities of the United Nations agencies operating in Somalia should focus on, to ensure recovery of Somalia.

The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has presented the practical achievements that have been confirmed in the areas of national security, strengthening of friendship, debt forgiveness, development of economic infrastructure and reconciliation.

Also, the President spoke about the burdens and difficult situations that the government is dealing with, first of all the drought that has ruined the lives of thousands of families, the effects of climate change, poverty and civil strife.

“This is a visit to support the government and the democratic process in Somalia. This visit assures us that the United Nations is fully committed to supporting our plans for government building and stabilizing the country. We are confident that the Somali people will be able to overcome the problems and challenges they are still facing, through the completion of the liberation of the country and reconciliation”.

The President of the Republic of Somalia thanked the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. António Guterres, for his visit to the country, and hoped that the government and the people of Somalia will be supported in achieving their vision of a developed, stable, and positive Somalia.

On his part, Secretary António Guterres expressed his happiness in his visit to Somalia, thanking the President of the Republic of Somalia for the warm welcome he gave to him and his delegation and noted that he understands the humanitarian situation faced by the government of Somalia and is being strengthened.
