National Consultative Council issues statement after two-day convention at Villa Somalia in Mogadishu

The National Consultative Council forum which began on Saturday at the Villa Somalia and convened by the new Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has concluded today in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The conference focused on strengthening the processes of cooperation and consultation between the Somali Federal government and the regional administrations with goodwill, confidence and trust.

The Council agreed on the priorities for political dialogue in the new term 2022 – 2026. The Council has also congratulated the President-elect of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and prayed for his national service. The Council also commended the speed with which the President convened the National Consultative Council meeting in a spirit of political will and genuine commitment.

The Council also pledged to work with the President in good faith.

The National Consultative Council conference agreed on the following:

I. COMPLETE THE STRUCTURE OF SOMALIA’S STATE

Pursuant to the annexation of the 27 May 2021 Agreement on the Completion of the Somali State Building reached by the National Consultative Council, the Council agreed to focus on and prioritize the following:

A) Draft and timely completion to build on the achievements of the previous review of the Constitution, and be inclusive of all levels of Government and civil society.

B) The Council underlined the importance of completing the national security process such as building the army and fighting terrorism.

C) The council agreed to have a unified electoral system and democratic elections in the country.

D) The Council unanimously agreed to ensure political and social reconciliation and to resolve the disputes that have plagued our government.

E) The Council agreed to give priority to dialogue between the Federal Government and Somaliland.

F) The Council agreed to establish, accelerate and complete the federal system to make it private at the district level, and to decentralize governance.

G) The Council agreed to finalize an independent, transparent and accountable judiciary that can meet the needs of the Somali people.

II. DROUGHT SITUATION

A) The Council agreed to work together to assist the Somali people affected by the drought, to prepare for the recurrence of disasters, and to find a lasting solution.

B) The Council also calls for a united front in addressing the ongoing drought situation in the country.

C) The Council also calls on the Somali people and international partners to play their part in the ongoing drought.

The conference was convened by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and attended by the Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) Mohamed Hussein Roble, Presidents of the Federal Member States; Mr. Said Abdullahi Deni, Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Islam, Mr. Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed (Lafta-gareen), Mr. Ahmed Abdi Kariye, Mr. Ali Gudlawe Hussein and Governor of Benadir Mr. Omar Mohamud Mohamed (Filish).
