South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has inaugurated a new, high-quality factory, which will be the first in Africa to produce a full-blown Covid-19 vaccine.

The Nant-SA factory in Cape Town, was founded by South African-based US biologist Dr Patrick soon-Shiong.

The factory is set to produce its first vaccine in a year, with the goal of producing one billion doses a year by 2025.

South Africa, has two other centers, which produce mid-range vaccines. At the opening ceremony, President Ramaphosa said the move showed that the continent was moving towards self-sufficiency.

“Africa should no longer be in the last line of access to vaccines during epidemics, we must not reach out to get vaccinated,” said President Ramaphosa.
