The UK Parliament is set to hear a brief debate on Somaliland’s independence on Tuesday from Gaf Williamson, a South Staffordshire MP.
It is not the first time the UK parliament has heard a debate on the recognition of Somaliland, which declared independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991.
In December 2019, 11 Labor MPs voted in favor of recognizing Somaliland as a “British protectorate”.
One of the lawmakers later withdrew the motion.
The city councils of Cardiff, Sheffield and Birmingham have already announced their recognition of Somaliland’s independence, but this has not changed much.
