The African Union (AU) has spoken out against the recent move by the National Consultative Council (NCC) to ease the deadlock surrounding the elections, particularly in the lower house.
African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat warmly welcomed the agreement on January 9th and encouraged the Consultative Council to conclude the Lower House elections, transparently by February 25th.
He said it is important to also respect the agreements of 17th September 2020, May 27 2021 and the election process of October 1, 2020 and August 24, 2021.
“I urge Somali political leaders to exercise restraint and promote inclusive political dialogue on political stability,” Moussa Faki said.
Moussa Faki also stressed that the AU position is holding of a credible election which is an important step towards lasting peace in Somalia.
He said the AU was ready to step up its support for the country’s peace building process.
The African Union (AU) has repeatedly spoken out about the difficult situation in Somalia, urging Somali leaders to maintain stability in the country.
However, the Consultative Council recently resolved to hold Parliamentary elections within 40 days beginning from January 15 to February 25 this year.
