US President Joe Biden has appointed Hamse Warfa, a young Somali man, as his top adviser to the State Department.

Hamse Warfa is currently the Deputy Chair of the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) in the state of Minnesota. The Somali man will now play a key role in advancing the State Department’s diplomatic mission.

Hamse will be the highest-ranking Somali to be appointed by a US president. On January 17, it was announced that Hamse would be stepping down as deputy director of DEED.

“As I prepare to represent the entire American people, I am grateful to friends, colleagues and family for their support of my public work,” Hamse Warfa said in a statement released by the Minnesota Department of DEED.

Hamse Warfa is now joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Public Affairs, Refugees and Immigration Office, which is tasked with protecting IDPs.

This office also assists the President of the United States in determining the number of refugees coming to the United States each year
