The United Nations has announced $ 17 million in humanitarian assistance to address the drought crisis in Somalia and assist vulnerable people affected by the drought situation.
According to a joint statement from the United Nations and Somalia’s humanitarian partners, the 2022 Humanitarian Response Plan for Somalia, which seeks $ 1.5 billion, is helping 5.5 million Somalis including 3.9 million non-IDPs and another 1.6 million including people with special needs in 74 districts.
“The lives of the Somali people are in danger, and we have no time to waste,” Said United Nations High Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths.
He added: “In order to save lives of people in Somalia and prevent another humanitarian catastrophe, we must now release aid, so that people can escape further starvation and poverty. I am withdrawing $ 17 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund today. ”
Martin Griffiths called on other donors to ‘generously’ support the Humanitarian Fund for Somalia.
They said the HRP plan would prioritize 5 million of the most vulnerable, including 1 million children under the age of five.
The UN appeal also said that “conflict and insecurity this year have forced 777,000 people to flee their homes. In total, more than 2.9 million people have been displaced within Somalia – one one of the highest numbers in the world.
