Fishermen in Lamu County say there is nothing stopping them from fishing in the disputed waters ruled by the ICJ in Somalia.

Lamu, home to more than 7,000 fishermen whose livelihoods depend directly on fishing, mostly fish in disputed territorial waters along the Kenya-Somalia border.

On October 12th, the United Nations Supreme Court ruled in favor of Somalia in the territorial waters, although the decision was rejected by Kenya altogether, accusing the ICJ of bias.

Lamu fisherman spokesman Mohamed Somo said their efforts to win the case against Kenya, had failed. “We will keep fishing where we used to fish, because the ICJ has made a very poor decision.

“Obviously they do not want to consider what is happening to us,” Mohamed Somo said.

The Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta recently challenged the ICJ ruling.

He described the ruling as “unfair” and said it would worsen relations between the two countries.
