On June 29 this year, the National Electoral Consultative Assembly issued an election timetable for Presidential election slated to take place today October 10 based on the May 27 agreement reached in Mogadishu but the presidential poll timetable faced yet another delay.
Elections in Somalia have been delayed several times, due to non-compliance with election timetables issued by the National Consultative Assembly and the Federal Electoral Commission.
The chairman of the Federal Electoral Commission, Mohamed Hassan Cinrro, said the technical aspects of the election timetable was the sole responsibility of the National Consultative Assembly, but as a committee, the election was scheduled to take place within 50 days.
He also said that the reason for the delay in the elections was due to technical issues as well as other minor challenges which he said would be overcome in order to hold elections in Somalia.
Somalia’s elections have been postponed several times with outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo blaming his predecessors for several delays in the polls, with opposition politicians blaming president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo of being responsible for the delay in Somalia’s elections as his term ended on February 8, 2021 and thus holding the helm of power illegally.
