The Canadian government has said it will take in about 20,000 Afghan refugees, including women union leaders, government workers and others facing threats from the Taliban, as Taliban militants spread across the country.
“The situation in Afghanistan is dire and we will not just stare it without doing anything,” Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino told a news conference on Friday.
The Taliban is advancing to the capital, officials said special forces in Canada are part of a temporary employee at the embassy in Canada in Kabul, but details are not provided, as Operation of this type is critical.
Earlier on Friday, several countries including Spain, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands announced the withdrawal of their embassy staff in Kabul.
Canada says it is closely monitoring the situation in Afghanistan and is working with its allies in the country.
“Protecting the Canadian Embassy and our staff is our number one priority,” said Foreign Minister Marc Garneau.
