The Federal Government of Ethiopia has warned of the possibility of “using all its defensive powers” against rebels in the northern region of Tigrey, after rebel fighters recently made progress in their fight against government forces.

TPLF fighters on Thursday took control of Lalibela, a city recognized by Unesco as an ancient city.

The city is located in the Amhara region bordering Tigrey.

The Ethiopian government says it will be “forced to mobilize and deploy all armed forces in the Tigrean region”.

Fighting has intensified since June when the TPLF and its allies recaptured most of Tigray.

Ethiopian troops have withdrawn from the region and the government has declared a unilateral ceasefire
