Some residents of Siigaale neighborhood in Hodan district of Benadir region have begun to flee their homes for fear of reprisal attacks in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Mothers and children were seen carrying bags and some personal effects as they flee the troubled capital.

This comes after forces opposed to the extension of the term of the Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo set up bases in Siigaale neighborhood in Hodan district.

Some of the displaced people said that there was a sense of fear in their neighborhoods, saying that the neighborhoods were fortified against attacks.

Areas fortified include neighborhoods in Hodan, Hawlwadag and Abdiaziz districts, and heavily armed men are seen driving military vehicles around the neighborhoods.

Many displaced people who have sought refuge in other neighborhoods are still struggling with fears of renewed fighting.

This comes as the United States expresses concern on the deteriorating Somali situation and issued sanctions against Somali political leaders who fuel animosity and threaten the peace and security of the nation.
