A statement issued by Amnesty International’s East Africa division last night has called on the Federal Government of Somalia to ensure former Jubbaland security minister, Abdirashid Hassan Abdinur Janan, is brought to justice for atrocities committed in the Gedo region of Jubbaland regional state.

The human rights body said the now sacked interior minister had committed human rights abuses in the Gedo region and needed to be brought to justice.

“Now that Abdirashid Janan has fallen into the hands of the Federal Government of Somalia, government officials must ensure that justice and accountability for the alleged human rights abuses in the Gedo region perpetrated by Janan are met. Victims and families of victims deserve justice,” Amnesty International said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the former Jubbaland security minister was yesterday welcomed in Belet Xaawo district in Gedo region.

Abdirashid Janan was escorted by government ministers from Najah area on the outskirts of Beled-hawo district, accompanied by military vehicles and a large contingent of troops.

The administration of Belet Xaawo district and various sections of the community in the district welcomed him, and he was taken to Belet Xaawo district administration headquarters.
