U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Ilhan Omar on Tuesday issued a bill calling for the lower house to impose sanctions on Saudi Arabia’s heir apparent Mohammed bin Salman.
Ilhan said Mohamed Bin Salman, better known as MBS, should be punished for his role in the 2018 assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
U.S. intelligence says it has released a long-awaited report accusing Mohammed bin Salman of ordering the arrest or execution of Saudi journalist Kashoggi, a US-based journalist.
In a statement issued yesterday, Ilhan said: “This is a test of our humanity. If the United States truly supports freedom of expression, democracy and human rights, there is no reason not to impose sanctions on Mohammed bin Salman, the man our intelligence has confirmed killed Jamal Kashoggi, a journalist living in the United States”.
The United States last week imposed sanctions on more than 60 Saudi nationals, but not Mohamed Bin Salman.
