The members of the Union of Somali Presidential Candidates last night had a private meeting with the Speaker of the House of the People of Somalia Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman and discussed a number of issues.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the situation in the country and electoral issues as the term of the incumbent Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo is set to lapse today on 8th of February 2021 and therefore avoid constitutional vacuum in the country.
Some reports are indicating that the Union of Candidates has informed the house of the people speaker to give a null and void to the term of President of Somali Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo since it has ended constitutionally.
The candidates are also said to have urged the speaker to assume the presidency role as acting president though it was said to have been rejected by the speaker.
The Union of Candidates did not however elaborate much with details on their meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, but instead issued a statement saying that they will no longer recognize the presidency and power of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo as Somalia President.
