Biden made the remarks in an interview with CBS News on Sunday. But Iran’s top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has said Tehran will not abide by the agreement until the United States first lifts economic sanctions.
The 2015 agreement called for Iran to limit its nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions.
Former United States President Donald Trump has pulled the United States out of the 2018 deal and re-imposed sanctions, prompting Iran to rescind several provisions of the agreement.
Iran, which claims its nuclear program is safe, has been increasing its uranium enrichment since enriched uranium can be used for nuclear industrial energy, but it can also be used to make nuclear bombs.
