The Ministry of Interior, Federalism and Reconciliation of the Jubbaland state of Somalia has today began a three-day training workshop on conflict management and peace building for traditional elders in Kismayo, Jubbaland state.
The training which was held at Madino Hotel in Kismayo was officiated by the Jubbaland Minister of State for Interior Mohamed Muhumed Mohamed.
During the three-day training workshop, ways to resolve conflicts in the community and how elders can contribute to peace development will take a centre stage.
The Director of the Jubbaland Ministry of Interior, Adan Farah Garane said that a law was needed to resolve peace and conflict matters and that the Ministry of Interior is now preparing a reconciliation plan for Jubbaland.
“Knowing that you have been involved in resolving the Jubbaland conflict for many years, we are ready to increase your knowledge and the interior ministry is now in the process of formulating laws on the same,” Said Adan Farah Garane.
The spokesman for the Jubbaland Sultans, Ugas Omar Hirey who addressed the gathering underscored the critical role of traditional elders in managing conflict and peace within the community.
“The system of government and the traditional system must be strengthened in order to work together to resolve disputes within the community, that would be imperative,” Said Ugas Omar Hirey.
The state minister for interior who officiated the training workshop said traditional elders are the link between the community and always resolve issues in the community.
“Traditional elders are the unifying force of the society and when it is agreed upon, it is the traditional elders who implement it thus playing an important role in our midst,” Said Mohamed Muhumed Mohamed.
