The Minister of Women, Family Affairs and Human Rights of the Jubbaland Government, Adar Ismail Abdullahi, has officially initiated a workshop in Kismayo aimed at strengthening efforts to prevent harmful female genital mutilation (FGM) and protect the rights and well-being of girls across the state.
The workshop brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including service providers, local organizations, police representatives, traditional elders, and women’s groups, all of whom play a critical role in raising awareness and combating the practice within communities.
The primary objective of the gathering is to enhance public understanding of the harmful effects of FGM, promote community awareness, and reinforce collective efforts to safeguard the rights, dignity, and safety of girls.
Speaking at the event, Minister Adar Ismail Abdullahi emphasized that all forms of cutting that contradict Jubbaland’s laws, policies, and regulations on the prevention of harmful FGM are prohibited throughout the state. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting girls and ensuring that communities adhere to established legal and policy frameworks.
The workshop forms part of the Ministry of Women, Family Affairs and Human Rights’ broader strategy to strengthen community awareness, promote behavioral change, and advance the implementation of measures designed to eliminate harmful FGM practices across Jubbaland.
Officials noted that continued collaboration between government institutions, community leaders, civil society organizations, and women’s groups is essential to creating safer communities and ensuring a brighter future for girls throughout the region.
