Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ahmed Moallim Fiqi met with the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, on Wednesday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the OIC meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Minister Fiqi and Secretary-General Taha focused on enhancing cooperation and coordination between Somalia and the OIC. The Minister emphasized Somalia’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the organization to advance joint initiatives and discussed Somalia’s political, economic, humanitarian, and security developments.

Secretary-General Taha praised the Somali government’s efforts towards achieving development, stability, and counterterrorism. He reaffirmed the OIC’s steadfast support for Somalia’s strategic goals and objectives.

The Executive Committee of the OIC meeting addressed key issues, including the ongoing crimes by Israel against the Palestinian people and its infringement on the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Foreign Ministers reaffirmed the principle of respect for national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of all Member States, in accordance with the principles of the Charters of the United Nations and the OIC. They also strongly condemned the political assassinations targeting Palestinian leaders.

The meeting occurred amid heightened tensions following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, an attack that has fueled threats of retaliation against Israel and raised concerns about a broader Middle East conflict.
