Somali Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre, alongside Jubbaland State President Ahmed Mohamed Islam, inaugurated the new Ministry of Health building in Kismayo on Monday.
Prime Minister Barre highlighted that the inauguration of the modern-style building comes as Somali authorities address the humanitarian situation caused by El-Nino rains and work to prevent waterborne diseases.
Prime Minister Barre also briefed the heads of the Jubbaland Ministry of Health on the federal government’s plans to respond to the impact of torrential rains in Jubbaland regions, especially in the Gedo region, following flooding from the Jubba River in several districts.
The Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) said on Saturday that at least 96 people have died from the devastating floods which have affected 2.3 million others in Somalia.
El Nino is a climate pattern that occurs every two to seven years, while the Indian Ocean Dipole is a climate pattern linked to sea surface temperatures in the ocean.
