Somalia’s National Communications Authority (NCA) and Starlink have held talks where the satellite-based internet network created by SpaceX expressed its interest in becoming a licensed operator in Somalia.

NCA said that during the meeting, Starlink presented its internet system, which already operates in more than 53 countries.

The head of Global Licensing and Market Dynamics at SpaceX explained what the company wants to bring to Somalia if the company gets permission from the industry regulator, promising to cooperate with telecommunication companies and internet providers that operate in Somalia.

NCA manager Mustafa Yasin Sheikh welcomed Starlink’s interest in operating in Somalia but emphasized that Starlink must first meet the required licensing requirements and go through the agency’s licensing process. The agency will evaluate Starlink’s bid and the service plan it wants to implement in the country, he said.
