The Somali military reports that it has thwarted an al-Shabab militant attack on a military base in the country’s central Galgaduud region.
The assault occurred in the village of Masagawa, located in the central Galmudug state, on Saturday morning.
Military officials, speaking to Somali government-run media, stated that the army inflicted significant casualties on the attackers. However, al-Shabab asserted that it had gained full control of the Masagawa village following the attack.
The militant group also claimed to have seized military vehicles and weapons during the assault.
This al-Shabab attack came just a day after the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) Forces, with the support of international allies, eliminated at least 20 al-Shabab militants in a pre-planned operation in the Lower Shabelle region on Thursday night.
NISA confirmed in a statement that the operation took place between the Ugunji and Mubarak areas, where the militants had been congregating in a forested region.
