Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Fei Shengchao on Monday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations in politics, cooperation, security, economic development, and humanitarian issues. Somalia and China have a long-standing diplomatic relationship, with Somalia being the first East African country to establish diplomatic relations with China.
Prime Minister Barre thanked the Chinese government for its support, including providing COVID-19 vaccines, humanitarian aid, personnel training, and scholarships for Somali students studying in China. China has also assisted Somalia in combating drought by delivering over 500 tons of wheat and rice.
Ambassador Shengchao emphasized that Somalia is a strategic friend of China and pledged to continue supporting and cooperating with the Somali government.
