Banadir regional court will hear for the first time the case against the Secretary General of the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), journalist Abdalla Ahmed Muumin on Sunday.

Abdalle Ahmed Mumin was arrested in Mogadishu on Tuesday as he prepared to board a flight to Nairobi on a business trip.

Mumin’s detention was seen to be related to the opposition of a government directive on giving al-Shabaab a media blackout.

But, ministry of Information said he is being held on a security-related charge and not related to his work as a journalist.

Local and international journalists groups condemned the arrest of SJS leader and called on the government to immediately release him.

Members of various Somali journalist unions have expressed concern on the new government directive barring them from reporting on the Somalia-based al-Shabaab, a terror group affiliated with Al Qaeda.
