First Deputy Speaker of the Somali Lower House Parliament, Sadia Yasin Samatar became the first woman to act as Somalia’s President after the President and Speaker embarked on the first foreign trips of their administration.

Samatar made history earlier this year when she became the first woman elected to top leadership in Somalia’s largely patriarchal parliament.

On Sunday, Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan, UAE Minister of State, received Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at the Abu Dhabi Presidential Airport.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to UAE comes after Sheikh Shakhbout attended his inauguration ceremony as President of Somalia in Mogadishu on June 9.

According to Villa Somalia, the President’s two-day visit would focus on strengthening diplomatic ties between the two countries, facilitating travel and trade, and enhancing cooperation between the two countries.
