Somalia’s parliament to hold first session after presidential election

Somali parliamentarians have been informed that there will be a joint session of both houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia today.

The agenda for this session is stated in the first reading of the Somali Government’s 2022 Budget.

Since the presidential election, parliament has not convened.

A meeting scheduled to discuss the Rules of Procedure of the House of the People has recently failed. The meeting was later adjourned after lawmakers failed to turn up.

The meeting was attended by 70 MPs and the Speaker said that the absent MPs should attend the parliament as soon as possible and reconvene on June 12.

The lack of a quorum in parliament is attributed to the fact that many lawmakers left the country following Somalia’s presidential election.
