Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has promised new Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud that he will reopen the two countries’ borders.
Speaking at the inauguration of President Hassan Sheikh, Uhuru further pledged to work to increase flights to Mogadishu.
The Kenyan president said the move would boost trade between the two countries and boost the two countries’ economies.
“I personally look forward to working with you to break down all these trade barriers to open our borders and create air links between our two countries so that our people can develop together.
“Kenya truly recognizes that our stability and economic well-being depend on Somalia and the region,” said President Kenyatta.
Uhuru traveled to Somalia during the inauguration ceremony of new Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Mogadishu on a Kenyan Air Force plane, with security experts saying this was due to insecurity in the region.
