Somalia’s new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to visit Baidoa on Tuesday as part of his first visit to regional states ahead of his inauguration ceremony in Mogadishu next month.

Preparations for the reception of the President’s delegation are underway in Baidoa, the capital of the Bay region, where he will meet with the leaders of the Southwest state, led by President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, as well as segments of civil society.

The President will also be briefed on the drought situation in the South West, as his special envoy for drought response, Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, is among the delegation.

The Southwest state regional president has been a close friend of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo. The two leaders will discuss political stability and how the federal government can work with the regional government, sources revealed.

Southwest has a 77-member legislature, most of whom appear to be united and support Southwest President Laftagareen.
