Somali Parliamentary speakers to be elected next week

The two houses of the Somali parliament held a joint meeting in Mogadishu on Monday and approved the timetable for the election of the house speakers.

The committees organizing the election of the House Speakers proposed to hold the election for the speaker of the Upper House will be elected on April 26 and the speaker for the Lower House on April 27.

‎The registration of candidates will officially begin on Tuesday.

The joint session also approved amendments that have been made to the fees for candidates seeking senior leadership.

Candidates for speaker of both houses will be now be charged $ 20,000, while deputies will be charged $ 15,000. Previously candidates were charged $10,000 for speaker and $5,000 for deputy speaker.

Candidates seeking the presidency will now pay a $40,000 registration fee, up from $30,000 in the 2016-2017 electoral period.

No date has been set for the presidential election so far.

‎190 MPs voted in favour of amendments, while one MP refused and six MPs abstained from voting.
